Grateful Jazz Band
Grateful Jazz Band is a consortium of Chicago area musicians steeped in the genre bending traditions of improvisational music. We are dedicated to creating new arrangements of familiar favorite songs and new original music to create a fun danceable musical experience for a wide range of music fans.
We rely heavily on the catalogs of the traditional jazz masters, as well as classic and current rock and pop, and lean deeply into our love for improv/jam based spontaneous arrangements. With influences that reach into the various styles of artists like Miles Davis, Jerry Garcia, Herbie Hancock, Bruce Hornsby, we focus on the fun danceable grooves of Funk, Latin, Swing, Blues, Pop, and maybe even a touch of classical music. The Grateful Jazz Band is ready to create a lasting memorable musical experience for your venue or event.

Since it's inception in 2023, Grateful Jazz has played as a solo, duo, trio and quartet on many stages including Teddy O's, 28 Mile, Ravinia Food Truck Thursdays, Madame Zuzu's, Visceral Adventure Lounge, Glenfest, and Wave That Flag Fest. GJB is anchored by the piano and keyboard playing of Cary Cohen, who has played and toured in projects with members of Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia Band.
